My dogs are like my children, so come Christmas time they also have a selection of presents under the tree and from family members. Also, I am one of those people who celebrate my dogs birthdays, with cake and presents and the odd selfie to remember the occasion. Because of this, and the fact that Dylan, Daisy & Arlo are spoilt mutts they needed a storage place which they could access to hold all their favourite toys and grooming brushes. Unlike my dad who is a builder, I am no good at DIY or creating things from wood or other materials, but I can just about pick up a paintbrush and give it a go...

Whilst on a bit of retail therapy session in @TK Maxx (my favourite shop) I saw a nice but rather boring looking toy box for a child's bedroom. It was a good size not too big but not too small and also the top was low to the ground so even my little chihuahuas could get there head over to pick something out. I thought it was perfect and for £19.99 I raced to the till and brought it.

I could have left the toy box as it was but thought I would inject a bit of colour and as it was inexpensive was happy to take the risk that I could mess it up. Like I say my dad is a builder so he had various paints in the shed as well as brushes etc so I just needed to pick some colours to paint with.

As it wasn't a massive project I purchased two tester paint pots from Wilko for £1.25 each. I went for "Cornish ice cream" (white) for the majority of the toy box, and then "Minted" (teal) for the side panels. The bright orange was a colour that dad had in the shed so I used that for the words.

Gave the box a couple of coats of paint, didn't have to varnish or anything and I left the inside of the box unpainted. I was happy with how it turned out for a little upcycle project. The dogs love it and use it all the time. It is stocked with balls and cuddle toys and left open in the bedroom so they can help themselves whenever they feel to play.

What do you think? Have you upcycled anything for your canine companions?
